Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design of equipment, systems, and processes for refining raw materials, mixing, compounding, and processing chemicals into valuable products. Material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, separation technologies, and chemical reactor design are among the essential knowledge.

You can work in various industries if you are a chemical engineer. At a petroleum refinery, crude oil is refined into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and lubricating oil; at a fertilizer plant, ammonium nitrate is produced; and at a personal-care product manufacturer, dozens of ingredients are combined to create shampoo or skin lotion.

Biomedical engineers design and develop devices that assist physicians with patient diagnosis and treatment. Examples include medical imaging equipment and devices that enable remote drug administration or surgical procedures.

Biomedical engineering is an excellent career choice for individuals who enjoy the challenge of confronting new problems head-on and developing innovative solutions. These innovations directly enhance the health and quality of life of patients.

In addition to hospitals and laboratories, biomedical engineers work in research facilities, educational institutions, and government agencies. They create new devices, evaluate their efficacy, and provide technical support for existing products.
